In 2000, many of us were inconvenienced by the 10 week strike by train drivers in Irish Rail who were members of the Irish Locomotive Drivers Association (ILDA). At the time I can recall damning the participants in the strike in terms that could not be repeated here. Having read Brendan Ogle's account of the circumstances leading up to that strike and specifically, how the establishment handled the situation, my view would have to change to one whereby not condoning their actions, I can understand why they felt that they had to take the action that they did. The book covers the reasons behind the break away from the 2 trade unions representing train drivers in Ireland, the machinations of the establishment to prevent and obstruct these actions every step of the way, the personal side of the individuals involved, the end of the strike and the subsequent vilification of individuals who assisted ILDA overcome the legal hurdles thrown in their way. As an insight into a dying movement (trade unions) within Ireland, Off The Rails is a fascinating story and well worth the read.
